Final Project – Elementary Helpers

For the final test grade in Elementary Helpers, you will complete an activity or project of your choosing that you agree upon with your cooperating teacher. This can be ANYTHING related to the elementary classroom or students that would be helpful to your cooperating teacher, but that goes above and beyond what you usually do during your Elementary Helper block. If you have Elementary Helpers for more than one period, you only need to complete one project.

Here are some ideas, but you can come up with your own project as well.

  • Make a bulletin board display in the classroom or hallway
  • Decorate the classroom door with a summer theme (or another theme of the teacher’s choosing)
  • Read a book to the whole class
  • Create an arts and crafts activity for the students to do
  • Make a display of student work to hang in the classroom or hallway
  • Organize (or straighten and reorganize) the teacher’s classroom library
  • Organize the teacher’s supply cabinet(s)
  • Help teach a lesson
  • Help teacher clean and pack up for the summer

Your grade will be based upon an evaluation by your cooperating teacher. They will assess you on the following criteria:

  1. Quality of product
  2. Helpfulness of project to students and/or teacher
  3. Effort put forth in completing project
  4. Openness to input from teacher
  5. Time management

You should complete this project on or before May 13, 2019.

ELEMENTARY HELPERS NTI ASSIGNMENTS

One of the most important parts of an elementary student's education is reading, and teachers need to be familiar with a wide variety of children's literature. For each snow day, you will read a children's picture book and complete the following journal entry to be returned to Mrs. Stevens the next day school is in session. You can check out children's picture books from the WJHS library, the library at the elementary school where you're placed, or the Jessamine County Public Library. YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT THE BOOKS BEFORE THE FIRST SNOW DAY.

In your journal entry, please do the following:

1. At the top of the page, write the title of the book and the name of the author and illustrator.

2. Write a 5-10 sentence summary of the book's plot.

3. Write 5 open-ended questions ("why" or "how" questions) you could ask students while reading the book aloud.

4. Write a 5-10 sentece reaction to the book. Did you like the book? Why or why not? Do you think elementary students would like the book? Why or why not?

***You will have the NTI day(s) plus the same number of days we missed upon return to turn in this assignment.
