Weekly Homework Information

Hello Parents!

It’s time to start weekly homework!  Please keep this letter as a reference to use throughout the year as you help your child complete their homework each day.  Because first grade is such an important year in a child’s life, we work hard as a first grade team to assign homework that will help your child learn and grow throughout this school year.  This week’s homework packet, which you will find in this reading book bag, is a shortened version of the homework that will be sent home weekly.  We wanted to use this week as an introduction for students to our weekly homework assignments.  Below you will find information about each of the homework assignments your child will have each week.  Please read carefully so your child can complete the weekly homework effectively and successfully.  Thank you so much for your continued support!

*Homework is always due on Fridays! Please make sure it is complete and turned in each Friday!

*Please make sure your child’s homework is returned to school each Friday in your child’s binder.  Each Friday your child should bring the completed homework (including spelling tic-tac-toe activities) in their binder

*One reason that we assign homework is for students to learn responsibility and to help them get ready for second grade.  Please encourage your child to complete their homework daily.  If your child does not turn their homework in each Monday, they will spend their recess time completing the homework the day it is due!

Weekly Homework Consists of the Following:

Weekly Reading Log

Students are required to read 20 minutes 5 nights a week.  I will be sending books home that are on your child’s reading level for them to read in order to complete their reading logs each week.  Please read with your child daily during these 20 minutes.  You will be amazed at how much 20 minutes a day can help your child become a stronger reader!  There is also an option to do Lexia two times a week for 20 minutes in place of reading a book for two days. More information about that to follow.

Spelling Words Tic-Tac-Toe

(This is including in this week’s weekly homework packet!)

Each week students will have spelling words.  These spelling words are made up of sight words as well as words we make during our making words time each day.  We will be working with your child on these words daily, but your child also needs to practice them at home.  On the spelling words tic-tac-toe board, your child will choose 3 activities per week and complete them using their weekly spelling words.  They may complete these activities on the back of the tic-tac-toe sheet or on a separate piece of paper.  These completed activities must be sent in with the homework on Mondays.  Spelling tests over these words are on Fridays!

Math Practice

(This is including in this week’s weekly homework packet!)

An important part of first grade is practicing what is learned at school.  We choose one math worksheet per night to put into our weekly homework packets.  These worksheets cover topics we are currently learning in math and give students the opportunity to practice concepts they are currently learning.

Reading Comprehension

Your student may have a short reading passage that they will be expected to read and answer questions about.

Starting the second 9 weeks, a fluency passage will be included in your child’s weekly homework packet.  Please read through this passage with your child twice daily.  We will be reading this passage daily at school as well.

Sight Word Lists

Your child has a sight word list that was made with the words they missed when they were assessed recently.  Please practice these words with them daily.  Sight words are a big part of helping your child become a stronger reader!

Please make sure your child completes all homework assignments and turns them in each Monday!
