How are students identified for Gifted and Talented?

Qualifications for the Gifted and Talented Program for Intermediate Students

(4th and 5th grades)

 

How are students identified?

Students are formally identified as Gifted and Talented at the beginning of 4th grade. To qualify, students must meet the criteria of scoring 96% or higher on one of two norm referenced assessments given in the area(s) of General Intellect, Language Arts, Math, Science, and/or Social Studies. Examples of Norm-referenced assessments that can be used include MAP, CogAt, and CAT 6. They also must meet evidence requirements that include; work samples, teacher referrals, anecdoctal evidence, etc.

 

How are students serviced?

-Once identified, students are given opportunities to extend their learning through projects/extensions in the classroom and are also pulled out to meet with the GT teacher to receive additional services in Critical Thinking Skills.

-Students who are identified in Leadership, Creativity, Music, Art, Drama, and Dance will be given opportunities throughout the year to help them to reach their fullest potential in their specific talented area. (See RDES GT Plan for specifics)

 

Jessamine County Schools follows the Kentucky Regulations in order to formally identify students for the GT program
