On April 20, 2018, East Jessamine High School permitted students to participate in the rally for school-wide safety. Students were permitted, but not encouraged to walk out of school for seventeen minutes. The students that chose not to participate were permitted to go to the gymnasium during the event. Furthermore, East administrators decided to accompany the event with the monthly fire drill. All students were to participate in the fire drill. After the fire drill, students were given the option of returning to the building or participating in the rally. East High administration worked to communicate the logistics of the event in an efficient manner. However, it is evident that some students and teachers did not receive the message. Therefore, some students participated against their will. East High values the rights of all students and staff, and works hard to protect those rights. Student and staff advocacy is one of our top priorities. We apologize for the miscommunication, and will utilize this event as a learning experience in the future.
