Back to school traffic safety

School buses are rolling! As our students begin the new school year, let's all refresh our knowledge on traffic safety to ensure everyone gets to and from school safely.

🚗 A REMINDER FOR ALL DRIVERS:

  • Slow Down: Pay close attention to posted speed limits in school zones and residential areas.

  • Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and be extra watchful for children walking, biking, or waiting at the bus stop.

  • Know the Law: When a school bus stops, has its red lights flashing, and its stop arm extended, you MUST stop.

    • On a two-lane road, all traffic from both directions must stop.

    • On a highway with four or more lanes, only traffic following the bus must stop.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 TIPS FOR PARENTS & STUDENTS:

  • Wait Safely: Stand at least 6 feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb while waiting for the bus.

  • Wait for the Signal: Don't approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop, the doors have opened, and the driver signals that it's safe to board.

  • Look Both Ways: When crossing the street after getting off the bus, look left, right, and left again to make sure all traffic has stopped.

Let's work together to make this a safe and successful school year for every student across Jessamine County!
